Yet Another Zombie Survivors Survivor Tier List
Leaders and rescues ranked after the 1.0 roster, including Ranger.
This ranking treats each survivor as both a leader and a rescue. Full perk as leader, half perk as a pickup. 1.0 added Ranger and asked the rest of the roster to live next to Fear, HUB quests, and Bio Lab. If you still need unlocks, use how to unlock survivors first. If you want finished trios, skip to best squads.
S tier
SWAT. The honest S. Rifle line, Helicopter Strike, turret, no weird resource. As leader he makes Isolated City and Hardcore readable. As a rescue he still dumps DPS into whatever tanky perk you started. Rank him. The SWAT notes on the builds page assume Assault Rifle before gadget spam.
Engineer. S as a rescue, high A as a leader. The Energy Shield is the reason new players see minute sixteen. Leader Engineer is a real style (Tesla, turrets, electrocute) but most accounts should park him in slot two until Hardcore is easy. Cooldown Training makes him absurd. Zero cooldown can hitch the client; leave a sliver.
A tier
Tank. Rockets, minigun, Bombing Strike, armor perk. S in last-minute Hardcore, A overall because early Tank before the rocket evolves can feel slow. Leader Tank is excellent for “It’s Raining Men” style physics jokes and for wasteland worms you would rather delete than dodge.
Huntress. A as leader, S as rescue. Eagle Eye is team-wide crit. Bow needs stacks. Unlock her at fifteen minutes and never leave home without her until you are doing joke runs. 2023 lists that buried her are outdated.
Ranger. A at 1.0 launch with S ceiling. Fear is unique. Crit/luck aura plus heals wants ranks. First nights feel clumsy. Bio Lab is her advertisement. Do not replace SWAT with an unranked Ranger on your first Hardcore badge.
B tier
Ghost. Boss melt, Protocol: Critical, Thousand Cuts. A in Endurance clips, B for most Default dawns because armor is the tax you pay to see minute twenty. Pair with a shield. Farm her after Huntress.
Mechanic. Ice, ability amp, wrench guns. B until you like reading trees. S-adjacent in ability-stacking squads with Engineer. Unlock at four thousand activations. Not a first leader.
Pyro. Burn lanes. B on Green Hell and anywhere packs clump. Default city is already solved without her. Bring a Tank or Engineer so you can exist while the fire works.
C tier
Medic. Heals and a revive window. C as a DPS slot, B as a learning wheel. She slows Ghost farms because you stay healthy and stop picking kits… wait, that is her own unlock irony. For Hardcore she often costs a gun. Use her to teach a friend the genre, then park her. Unless a quest in the 1.0 HUB specifically wants a Medic leader, SWAT still pays more.
Leader versus rescue cheat sheet
Need a dawn: SWAT lead, Engineer, Tank or Huntress. Need bosses: SWAT or Ghost lead, Engineer, Huntress. Need Bio Lab: ranked Ranger or SWAT, Engineer, Huntress. Need a laugh: Tank lead, rockets, physics. Need a badge for Medic: take her lead on purpose and get hit. More recipes sit on best builds and the squad planner.
Ranks move these letters. A rank 3 Medic with the right items is a different paragraph. We rank the unit you have after a normal 1.0 week, not a prestige god. Training still matters more than swapping B to A: training first, then this list.
If your favorite is C, play them anyway. The game is a sandbox with free refunds. Just do not pretend Isolated City Hardcore is the place to prove a meme until the badge exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Who is the best survivor?
SWAT as leader for most of 1.0. Engineer is the best rescue. Huntress is the best aura.
Is Ranger better than SWAT?
Not on night one. Rank Ranger and learn Fear. SWAT still clears Hardcore with fewer excuses.
Should I use Medic?
To unlock her, to do her quests, or to learn. Not as a default DPS slot.
Do rescue perks stack fully?
No. Rescues give half the leader perk. Start the survivor you actually want to scale.
