How to Unlock Survivors in Yet Another Zombie Survivors

Milestones, ranks, and who to chase after SWAT, Tank, and Engineer.

How to Unlock Survivors

The roster is the long-term reason to keep running Isolated City after you already know how to move. You start with three survivors. Everyone else is a lifetime counter, a timed survive, or a 1.0 addition. This page is the unlock list as of the 20 August 2026 launch, plus the farming order that wastes the fewest evenings. Pair it with the unlock checklist when you want boxes to tick, and with the survivor tier list when you want to know who is actually worth the grind.

A survivor you have not unlocked cannot be a leader. You can still find some of them as rescues later, but the clean path is: unlock, then rank them as leader so their perk doubles. Rank 2 is five thousand kills with that survivor as the starter. Rank 3 is twenty thousand more. Power-up pools widen at those ranks. If a gun line feels empty, you are probably still rank 1.

Starting three

SWAT, Tank, and Engineer need no extra work. Play them. Rescue the other two during a run. That trio is still the recommended first squad. SWAT teaches weapon evolution. Tank teaches armor and rockets. Engineer teaches why a shield is worth a DPS slot. Do not skip Engineer because turrets look boring. The shield is the reason early Huntress and Ghost farms stay alive.

Huntress, Ghost, and Medic

Huntress unlocks when you survive fifteen minutes in one run. Default Isolated City is the farm. Take SWAT, accept rescues, finish the rifle, and do not stand in spit. Once you have her, put her in the squad even as a rescue: Eagle Eye is a team crit engine. She is the first “how to get” answer on this wiki for a reason.

Ghost unlocks at one hundred boss kills. Bosses are the large health-bar enemies that start showing around minute seven in Default and much earlier in Endurance. Isolated City Default is slower but safer. Endurance spawns bosses sooner and also ramps danger until you get one-shot. Farm Ghost with SWAT plus Engineer while you still need the shield. Count is lifetime, not per run.

Medic unlocks at two hundred health kits. Kits are the red hearts on the ground. They do not count if you walk over them at full HP. They do not count if you pick a healing power-up instead of a kit. This is why Medic is slower than Ghost for many SWAT mains: good squads stay healthy. Farm Medic on a slightly greedy run. Take a hit on purpose when a kit is on the floor. Isolated City Default still works. Do not use One Hit mode for this; you cannot collect kits if you die to the first slap.

Mechanic, Pyro, and Ranger

Mechanic unlocks after a large number of ability activations across all runs. Patch 0.9.1 lowered the requirement to four thousand. If your counter still shows five thousand, you are on an older note: trust the in-game tooltip. Mechanic is ice, gadgets, and an ability-amp for the whole squad. She is worth unlocking even if you keep SWAT as leader, because a rescued Mechanic still donates half a perk and a weird gun line.

Pyro is the burn specialist added during later Early Access. Treat the in-game silhouette tooltip as source of truth for her exact remaining counter if a patch moved it. She wants space to ignite packs. Pair her with a shield or Tank so the fire does the work while you kite. She is not a first-week leader unless you already like standing in the mess.

Ranger is the ninth survivor and the 1.0 headline. She is a park ranger with a crossbow, animal tools, a Fear status, and a crit/luck aura that also heals allies. The studio flagged a steep curve. Unlock her from the 1.0 roster rules shown on the loadout screen, then rank her before you expect her to replace SWAT. Read version 1.0 for the design intent and best builds for how she sits in a trio.

Fastest order

  1. Clear a Default dawn with SWAT so Isolated City systems open. 2. Hit fifteen minutes for Huntress, even if you die after the popup. 3. Run SWAT / Engineer / Huntress to farm bosses for Ghost. 4. Take messy, kit-hungry runs for Medic. 5. Spam ability-heavy kits (Engineer shield, Tank bombs, Huntress rain) for Mechanic. 6. Finish Pyro and Ranger when their tooltips complete. 7. Rank whoever you actually play as leader.

Maps and modes are separate unlocks. Winning Default on Isolated City opens Vile Wasteland, not a new survivor. Hardcore, Boss Rush, and One Hit are per-map achievements. Do not confuse a mode icon with a silhouette. The maps walkthrough covers those gates. Getting Started is the run structure. Training is the meta that makes the counters go faster, especially Role Player for XP so you evolve guns before bosses stack.

If a silhouette will not budge, hover it. Secret conditions exist for some maps and may exist for later survivors. The Trello roadmap is where the studio still parks unfinished roster ideas. This wiki will not invent a counter the game does not show.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I unlock Huntress?

Survive fifteen minutes in a single run. Isolated City Default is the easiest place to do it.

How do I unlock Ghost?

Kill one hundred bosses across your account. Farm Default or cautious Endurance with SWAT and Engineer.

Why is Medic so slow?

Health kits only count when you are missing health. Strong squads stay full. Get hit, then pick up the heart.

Is Ranger in the base 1.0 roster?

Yes. She is the ninth survivor added at launch, with Fear, animals, and a crit/luck aura.
